A Guide to Different Types of Fiberglass Felt

 

Fiberglass felt available on the market can be mainly categorized into several types based on production processes and applications. By form classification, chopped strand mat is made of randomly interwoven glass fiber strands bonded with binder, offering isotropic properties and uniform strength, primarily used as reinforcement layers in composite products. Continuous filament mat uses long fibers to form the mat, providing good tensile properties and resistance to breakage, suitable for thermal insulation applications requiring higher strength. Needled felt is produced by needling machinery that entangles fibers together without binder, offering higher temperature resistance and being environmentally friendly and odorless, commonly used for high-temperature filtration materials and insulation layers.

By surface treatment classification, standard mat has no facing with exposed fibers, suitable for concealed works and cavity filling. Aluminum foil-faced mat features aluminum foil laminated on one side, combining moisture resistance and reflective insulation functions, ideal for air conditioning ducts and exposed pipelines, providing good moisture protection and neat appearance. Black glass fiber mat has a black-treated surface offering light-blocking properties, suitable for light-sensitive applications. By density classification, low-density felt (10-24kg/m³) is soft, fluffy, and elastic, suitable for lightweight filling and soundproofing layers. Medium-density felt (24-48kg/m³) offers moderate strength and stable insulation performance, making it the preferred choice for general thermal insulation applications. High-density felt (48-96kg/m³) has a dense texture and strong resistance to airflow erosion, suitable for high-speed air ducts and vibration-prone environments.

 

Additionally, there are specialty Fiberglass felt products. Hydrophobic treated felt undergoes special processing to resist moisture absorption, suitable for humid environments. Flame-retardant enhanced felt contains added flame retardants for higher fire safety ratings, ideal for locations with strict fire protection requirements. Composite felt is combined with other materials such as non-woven fabric or fiberglass cloth, offering multiple functionalities. Understanding these different types helps in making informed decisions based on specific application requirements.
