From Fiberglass to Graphene: The Technological Evolution of Fire Blanket Materials
Apr 22, 2026
How Fire Blanket Materials Have Advanced: Fiberglass, Then Graphene
The base fabric of fire blankets has gone through several upgrades. Standard fiberglass (temperature resistance ~550°C) is cost-effective and suitable for home kitchens. Then silicone-coated fiberglass appeared to prevent fiber shedding and skin irritation. Today's high-end products use graphene or graphite coatings, which can increase flame retardancy by more than 20 times.

Different types of fire blankets require different materials: a Fire Extinguisher Blanket typically uses silicone-coated fiberglass; an EV fire blanket needs thicker graphite or vermiculite coatings to withstand lithium battery temperatures; a car fire blanket emphasizes light weight and quick deployment; and a welding blanket must use high-density fiberglass or high-silica fabric to resist slag burn-through.
Choose the material based on your actual fire risk and budget.
